Sometimes we are so caught up in the moment living our wonderful lives with our goldens that we forget to make tangible memories along the way. To my point, we were decorating our golden’s Christmas tree and just realized we have never made a pawprint ornament for our Molly girl and she just turned 10! We cannot believe we literally let a decade go by without making a pawprint keepsake for her. But that ends now because we just made Molly her first ever pawprint ornament! We made the ornament out of 3 household ingredients that you most likely already have in your pantry. The dough was so easy to make and decorating was the best part. We even made an ornament for Molly’s son, Bentley, so he didn’t feel left out. Besides, we only have one paw print ornament that we made for him when was still a puppy so he was in need of an update. The recipe for the salt dough ornament was inspired by “Love Mischka” and the reference is below!
Ingredients you will need:
1 cup white flour (and a little extra for rolling out the dough)
1/2 cup iodized salt
1/2 cup warm water
Materials you will need:
Medium sized bowl
Parchment paper
Baking sheet
Mixing spoon
Rolling pin
Drinking straw
Ribbon
Paint and/or glitter
Mini letter stencils
Round cookie cutter big enough to make the outline of the ornament
Directions:
Combine ingredients into a medium sized bowl until it turns into a dough.
Sprinkle a little bit of flour onto parchment paper and place dough on top.
Put a little bit of flour on top of dough and roll it out to 1/2 inch thick with rolling pin.
Place dough and parchment paper onto baking sheet and press your golden’s paw into dough. Try not to push it down too hard because if the dough is too thin it will bubble when cooking. However, you want to press their paw down enough to create an easily visualized pawprint.
Poke a small hole into top of dough above pawprint for ribbon.
Input mini letter stencils to make your pups name. You could also write their name on with a paint pen instead.
Cut out paw with round cookie cutter.
Place ornament and parchment paper onto baking sheet.
Preheat oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
Bake ornament for 1 hour.
Let it cool and then decorate with paint and/or glitter.
Cut ribbon to desired length and tie onto ornament.
Don’t forget to write the year on the back!
Display ornament on your tree for many years to come!
We decided to use glitter glue and sprinkled loose glitter into the indentations of the paw prints. We carefully wiped off the excess glitter. We then looped snowflake ribbon into the ornament with a big enough loop for a Christmas tree branch. We chose to decorate Molly’s pawprint with pink glitter and Bentley’s with blue glitter. You could also make stand alone pawprints to display instead of making an ornament. Whatever you decide is up to you!
Molly and Bentley think they turned out great!
