So, you’ve put down a deposit on a golden puppy, and you’re wondering how to prepare to ensure a smooth transition home. Below are some tips for what to expect so you can rest assured you are ready for your new best friend. Please note, as an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
1. The most important thing you must have for your golden puppy is time! You may even want to take some time off from work in order to help make their transition smoother. They are still babies and need time to adjust to their new life in your home. They also need to be taken outside to potty as much as possible which will help with getting them potty trained sooner. Also, do your best not to leave your golden in a crate all day while you’re at work (8 plus hours). It’s not fair for them to spend most of their days in a crate. Instead, consider hiring a professional dog walker or take them to a doggie daycare.
2. Get pet insurance! Whatever you do, don’t forget about purchasing pet insurance as soon as your take your pup home. It is really the best investment and will come in handy more than you know. Anything can happen at anytime so it’s important to have insurance in place just in case you need it. We have personally been using PetsBest for years and are pleased with the ease of submitting claims and how much they cover. It really has been a huge help for unexpected vet bills and medications. 3. Purchase the essentials.
A travel bowl is also a necessity during long walks or trips.
Bed that’s big enough for them to grow into and preferably with memory foam to keep them comfy. We bought the Big Barker orthopedic dog bed for our goldens and they love it!
Blankets are also nice to put in your dog’s bed with them. Our goldens love to carry their blankets around the house in their mouth LOL! A great idea to help comfort your puppy when transitioning home, would be to have your pup’s breeder put the dam’s scent on a blanket and/or toy.
You may also need to purchase a crate if they come crate trained or if you want to crate train them. Make sure you buy a big enough crate so you only have to purchase one. You can input a divider to make a smaller space for them so they feel more secure.
Puppy pads can be placed on the bottom of the crate for any accidents.
