The amount of floof your goldie sheds is endless. After spending tons of money on products and an incalculable amount of time on different methods with minimal results we thought, there must be a better way! So we set out to find a unique way to eliminate the excessive dog fur at the source. During our research we found, the Dyson Groom Tool.
The Dyson Groom Tool is an attachment that hooks up to a vacuum hose. We have a Dyson Ball Animal 2 vacuum but this device is compatible with several Dyson vacuums. The Dyson website lists all the vacuums that the tool is compatible with so you can ensure this product will work with your particular vacuum before purchasing. The tool has 364 bristles that are angled at 35 degrees. The bristles retract when pushing down a button. The bristles loosen up the excess fur, remove dead skin cells, and therefore decrease allergens. When letting go of the button, the vacuum sucks the hair away resulting in a less hairy home.
The tool is designed for adult medium to long haired dogs, perfect for a golden’s coat. So we put it to the test and used it on our resident goldens, Molly and Bentley.
Please note, this is an honest review of the tool. The Golden Pupper is not a paid advertiser of this product. This product was purchased by The Golden Pupper for $69 on Amazon, here. It is important to note, Molly and Bentley are not scared of the vacuum. If your golden is not comfortable with the vacuum, then this may not be the tool for your dog. Even though Molly and Bentley are not afraid of the vacuum, the tool had to be gradually introduced to ensure the dogs were comfortable with the process. A lot of positive verbal and tactile reinforcement in the form of reassurance, treats, and pets had to be provided with each step and each action was completed in a slow manner.
Before starting, sit on the floor with your dog to get on their level so they are more comfortable with the situation. We found it best to brush them in a smaller room (bathroom) so they were in a more controlled environment. The tool itself should then be shown to your dog dettached or attached to the vacuum with the vacuum not on. Let them smell it with no sudden movements and let them know it is, “okay.” Also, do not lift the tool over their head as this may make them uncomfortable. Then, brush them with the tool with the vacuum still not on.
Once they are fine with that step, turn the vacuum on and let them get used to the sound. Once you think they are ready, slowly brush them by pushing down the button on the tool so the bristles extend.
Again, start slow and you can proceed with more speed once they get used to it. Once you see a clump of hair form on the brush, let go of the button and the hair will then be sucked up into the vacuum. Repeat all steps until they are fully brushed.
After using the Dyson Groom Tool, this is what was found:
PROS:
Suction from the hose adequately contained removed fur
Removed a decent amount of fur
Quality made product with sturdy bristles
Tool was easy to attach to vacuum
Brush button is simple to use
Noticeable decrease in amount of hair in our environment
CONS:
Attachment was difficult to maneuver when brushing dog
Vacuum moved with hose leaving minimal room to work with
$69
Takes extra time and patience
May not be suitable for every dog
The verdict: we give the Dyson Groom Tool a rating of 8/10. The tool works well for its purpose but two points were removed due to some difficulty with ease of use and it takes some time for the dog to get used to it. It should be noted that the tool may be easier to use with other Dyson models so it’s worth a try. Our vacuum is a standard upright model whereas a handheld or cordless model may be easier to use the tool with. Also, there is an attachment hose you can buy separately that may help with maneuvering the tool when brushing. If you are unhappy with the tool, you can always return it within 30 days from the delivery date when purchasing through the Dyson website. The tool also has a one year warranty. Overall, we are happy with the purchase and will be consistently using this product to de-hair our goldens at the source! Let us know what you think of the tool in the comments below!
