It’s Christmas time! Our favorite time of year. Our goldens love to celebrate the holidays with us. They especially LOVE treats. Our professional treat tasting staff, Molly and Bentley, have had the pleasure of devouring all kinds of homemade cakes and treats over the years. We decided to make a new holiday inspired gingerbread treat this year! They have never had gingerbread and we were excited to see if they enjoyed the new flavor.
The treats were made with all dog safe ingredients as typical gingerbread with nutmeg is not safe for dogs. These treats are healthy and very easy to make. The inspiration for the gingerbread recipe was from “Gone to the Snow Dogs” and the icing recipe was from “Snoot and Toe Beans.” They are referenced below. You will need the following:
Gingerbread ingredients:
3 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp cinnamon powder
1 egg
1/2 cup coconut oil
1/2 cup molasses
Icing ingredients:
4 ounces of low of fat free plain cream cheese
1 tbsp of honey
2 tbsp low of fat free plain yogurt
Additional items:
Christmas/pet cookie cutters
Piping bag with decorative tip
Baking sheet and parchment paper/silicone baking sheet liner
Instructions:
Mix together the flour, ginger and cinnamon in a medium sized bowl.
Create a well within the dry mixture and place the egg, coconut oil, and molasses within it.
Mix all ingredients together until you form a cohesive dough. If your dough is crumbling, add a teaspoon of water at a time while kneading it in and only add more water if still needed.
Once your dough is of Play-Doh consistency (soft and not sticky), put your dough into the fridge to cool for 30 minutes to an hour.
Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.
Take your dough out of the fridge and roll it out to 1/4 inch thick with a rolling pin.
Cut your dough into shapes with your cookie cutters.
Place shapes onto a baking sheet lined with parchment/silicone
Bake treats for 15-20 minutes.
While the treats are cooling, it’s time to make the icing!
In a small bowl, combine the honey, cream cheese and plain yogurt.
You’ll want to thaw out the cream cheese beforehand or mix ingredients with a hand or stand mixer to make a butter cream like consistency.
Put icing into a piping bag with a decorative tip (we chose a small rounded tip).
Twist off the end of the piping bag and decorate your gingerbread doggie treats!
We thought the white icing on the gingerbread made for a nice contrast in colors. Outlining the shapes with icing made for a classy look.
Store the treats in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks, or in the freezer for up to 1 month.
Now it’s time for Bentley and Molly to let us know how we did!
They could not wait to eat their treats! As you can see they were a big hit!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and your golden pups! Let us know how your goldies loved their gingerbread treats in the comments below!
