Let’s say you lean in to give a kiss and notice your golden’s gums look thicker than last month. Or worse, the teeth look shorter. Like the gums are slowly eating the smile.

That overgrowth has a name. Vets often call what they see gingival enlargement. If a biopsy shows extra normal gum cells stacked the usual way, the histology label is gingival hyperplasia. Same owner problem either way: too much gum tissue, covering more tooth than it should, trapping junk that should not be there.

This is not a “cute chubby gums” thing. Those false pockets hold plaque, hair, and food. Inflammation climbs. Real periodontal disease and pain can follow. Teeth can be at risk.

Why this shows up in goldens

Any dog can get gum overgrowth. Boxers are the classic high-risk breed, and that is where a lot of the genetics research sits right now, including work at Cornell funded through the AKC Canine Health Foundation.

Goldens show up on some veterinary dentistry breed lists. They do not show up on every one. There is no Golden-specific gene test, and there is no solid published prevalence number for our breed. What we can say honestly: it happens in goldens, and we should take mouth changes seriously.

Three big drivers, and they can stack:

1. An over-the-top response to plaque and chronic gum inflammation. Some dogs recede. Predisposed dogs proliferate.

2. Genetics and breed tendency, strongest and best studied in Boxers, possible in other breeds including some Retrievers.

3. Medications. Cyclosporine (common for itchy atopic dogs) is the big one in vet practice. Calcium channel blockers like amlodipine are another. Certain anticonvulsants can do it too.

If your golden is on long-term cyclosporine for allergies, put gum checks on your radar. A published case series even includes a Golden Retriever whose owners said her teeth looked like they were disappearing while she was on cyclosporine.

What you might notice at home

- Gums that look thicker, redder, or “puffy”

- Teeth that look shorter because tissue is climbing the crown

- A focal lump on the gumline, or thickening across a whole section of the mouth

- Bad breath that will not quit

- Drooling, sometimes tinged with blood

- Bleeding when they chew toys or when you brush

- Soft-food preference, or backing off hard chews

- Pawing at the mouth or rubbing the face

Early changes often start subtle, sometimes at the lower front teeth. Advanced cases can bury most of a crown. Gum overgrowth can look a lot like other oral masses: peripheral odontogenic fibroma (the old “fibromatous epulis”), other growths, and yes, cancer.

Board-certified veterinary dentists push for a full dental under anesthesia when the mouth needs real work: probing, charting, full-mouth radiographs, and often biopsy of the tissue they remove. Appearance alone is not a diagnosis. One published Boxer case that looked like classic familial enlargement still had other tumors in the mix once histology came back.

Also bring the med list. If a drug is feeding the problem, your vet may be able to adjust it safely. Do not stop heart or seizure meds on your own.

What treatment usually looks like

For mild cases tied to a drug, changing the medication (when the prescribing vet says it is safe) can help a lot.

For significant overgrowth, surgery is the main stay. The vet trims the excess (gingivectomy) and reshapes the gumline (gingivoplasty) so those false pockets go away and a more normal margin comes back. That almost always happens with a professional cleaning under anesthesia.

Aftercare is important: pain meds as prescribed, soft food for about two weeks, no hard toys until things heal, then back to brushing and the schedule your vet sets.

Here is the hard truth for genetically predisposed dogs. Surgery helps comfort and function. It often does not permanently “cure” the tendency. Plaque control after surgery is what slows regrowth. Some dogs need the procedure more than once over a lifetime.

In select cyclosporine cases, vets have used azithromycin under supervision with promising results in a small case series. However, that is a vet decision and studies are mixed on how complete the fix is.

What actually helps at home

Daily toothbrushing with dog-safe toothpaste is still the biggest way to control it. Plaque is the fuel. Less fuel, less inflammation for predisposed gums to overreact to.

Regular oral exams and professional cleanings matter more if your golden already had overgrowth once. VOHC-accepted dental diets and dental chews can help as add-ons. Just keep in mind they are not a substitute for a brush and a real dental plan.

Skip the myths:

- “It is only cosmetic.” No.

- “Chews alone will prevent it.” No.

- “If it looks like hyperplasia, skip the biopsy.” No.

- Human toothpaste, random essential-oil rinses, or DIY chemistry. Hard no.

When to call sooner rather than later

Same week is fine for: new or progressive thickening, teeth looking shorter, stubborn bad breath, light gum bleeding, drooling, soft-food preference.

Same day, or ER if it is after hours, for: refusing food or water, obvious oral pain, heavy or ongoing bleeding, a mass that is growing fast or looks ulcerated and nasty, facial swelling, fever or lethargy with mouth trouble, trauma that will not stop bleeding.

A focal lump that looks like a tumor is not “wait and see until the next annual.”

Ah yes. One week the house is loud and your golden is in the middle of everything. The next week the backpacks are gone, the door shuts, and you have a 70-pound shadow staring at you wondering where everyone went.

Goldens were bred to work next to people. They do not clock out because the school year started. A sudden empty house is a big change for a dog who spent summer glued to whoever was home. Some goldens nap through it. A lot of them pace, bark, chew, or turn into velcro the second you pick up your keys. This is not your golden being “bad.” This is a social, working breed trying to figure out where the pack went.

Is it boredom, or is it separation anxiety?

A bored golden is restless. They need a job. A golden with separation anxiety is distressed because you left (ASPCA, n.d.). Watch for trouble that only happens when you are gone, or while you are getting ready to leave:

- Pacing, panting, or drooling as you grab keys and shoes

- Barking or howling shortly after the door closes

- Chewing or digging at doors and windows

- Accidents in a house-trained dog

- Refusing food or a stuffed toy until you come back

If those things also happen while you are home, that is usually manners or potty training, not separation anxiety (ASPCA, n.d.). If you are not sure, call your vet. Rule out a medical issue first, especially with seniors.

Do this the week before school starts

Do not wait for the first Monday and hope for the best. Practice the new schedule now. Walk them before the house empties. A tired golden is a kinder roommate. In Florida in August, that walk has to be early. Midday pavement will burn paws, and a backyard is not a day camp when it is 90 degrees (see Volume 27). Water, shade, and air conditioning are not optional.

Leave for short trips while you are still home for the summer. Five minutes, then fifteen, then an errand. Come back boring. The ASPCA’s advice is the one we use: keep hellos and goodbyes small. A pat, “be good,” and out. When you walk in, say “hi” and wait until they settle before the full golden reunion (ASPCA, 2014).

Give them a job that starts as you leave. A stuffed Kong, a lick mat, a snuffle mat, or a puzzle toy. The goal is that your departure predicts something good, not the end of the world.

If they have a crate they already love, use it. If the crate makes them worse, do not force it. A baby-gated kitchen or laundry room with their bed is enough (ASPCA, n.d.).

What a good empty-house day looks like

Morning: Potty, walk or backyard play while it is still cool, breakfast, then the “I’m leaving” toy.

During the day: Cool house, water, a couple of safe chews, and no guilt-trip camera watching every ten minutes. Check once if you need to. Goldens can feel your stress through the phone too.

Afternoon: Another potty break if someone can swing by. Four to six hours alone is a long stretch for a young golden. Seniors need the extra break even more.

Evening: They have been waiting for their people. Give them ten real minutes before homework and dinner take over. A short training session, a retrieve in the yard, a brush-out. You do not have to entertain them all night. You do have to clock back in.

When it is more than an adjustment

If your golden is hurting themselves, destroying doors, or howling the whole workday, this is bigger than a puzzle toy. Talk to your vet. Ask about a trainer who uses reward-based methods, or a veterinary behaviorist. Do not punish them for what they did while you were gone. They will not connect the scolding from what they did at 10 a.m. They will only learn that you coming home is scary too. Medication or calming aids are another vet conversation (ASPCA, n.d.).

A note for the Tampa Bay pack

If your kids just went back to school and your golden is losing their mind, you are not the only house on the block. Comment what your empty-house routine looks like. Your golden does not need the summer back. They need to know the pack still exists, and that you always come home.

In our ongoing effort to keep our community well-informed about the health of our beloved Goldens, this month's newsletter dives into an eye condition that has become increasingly important to understand: Golden Retriever Pigmentary Uveitis (GRPU).

We are particularly interested in this topic because The Golden Pupper’s very own goldens, Molly and Bentley, sadly have this progressive disease. Very few golden owners know about GRPU, what signs to look for, and do not know a veterinary opthalmologist exists for our furbabies to help prevent and treat it.

Understanding GRPU

Golden Retriever Pigmentary Uveitis, often abbreviated as GRPU, is a breed-specific eye disease that primarily affects Golden Retrievers. Recognized since the late 1990s, GRPU is an inflammatory condition of the eye characterized by the deposition of pigment on various parts of the eye, leading to potential complications like cataracts, glaucoma, and, in severe cases, blindness.

Symptoms to Watch For

Early detection is key with GRPU, but the symptoms can be subtle. Here are some signs to be vigilant about:

• Redness in the eyes - This might be one of the first visible signs, though it can be intermittent.

• Changes in eye color - Look for unusual pigmentation or color changes around the iris or on the lens.

• Cysts in the eye - These might not be visible without specialized equipment but are a hallmark of GRPU.

• Squinting or discomfort - If your Golden seems to be in pain or frequently squinting, it's worth a vet check.

• Vision changes - Any signs of vision impairment should prompt an immediate veterinary visit. A common vision change sign would be your golden bumping into things in their environment.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosing GRPU requires an ophthalmologic exam by a Veterinary Opthalmologist (VO), often involving pupil dilation to check for characteristic signs like radial pigment on the lens. General practicing veterinarians are not trained in this area of the field and do not have the equipment to evaluate the eyes as a VO does. A Veterinary Opthalmologist has had additional specialized training in this area of the field.

Treatment aims at managing inflammation and preventing or delaying complications like glaucoma. Common treatments include:

• Topical anti-inflammatory medications - To reduce inflammation.

• Systemic treatments - In some cases, oral medications might be necessary.

• Regular monitoring - Ongoing vet visits are crucial to adjust treatment and monitor progression.

The Genetic Aspect

GRPU is suspected to be hereditary, making responsible breeding practices vital. Breeders are encouraged to screen their dogs annually, even after retirement from breeding, to help prevent the spread of this condition. If a Golden is diagnosed with GRPU, breeding from that line should be ceased to avoid passing on the condition.

What Can Owners Do?

• Annual eye exams: Regular check-ups by a veterinary ophthalmologist can catch GRPU early resulting in the best prognosis. Free eye exams conducted by a VO are offered at times such as with the Golden Retriever Club of America so be on the look out online for dates and info!

• Educate yourself and others: Awareness is the first step in prevention and early treatment. If you or anyone you know has a golden, tell them about this disease and take their dog to a VO to be evaluated.

• Support research: Organizations like the Golden Retriever Foundation and the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation are actively researching GRPU. Consider supporting these efforts or participating in studies if possible.

If you’re looking to breed your stud golden retriever, selecting the right dam is crucial to ensuring the health, temperament, and pedigree of future puppies. Here’s a guide to help you navigate this important decision.

1. Health Clearances and Certifications

Before selecting a dam, ensure she has undergone all necessary health testing. Golden retrievers, like other breeds, are prone to specific genetic conditions. Some of the most common health concerns include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, heart conditions, and eye problems.

A reputable dam should have certifications from recognized organizations such as:

• Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) for hip and elbow dysplasia

• Canine Eye Registry Foundation (CERF) for eye conditions such as golden retriever pigmentary uveitis (GRPU) which has been recently confirmed as hereditary

• American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) for heart diseases such as subvalvular aortic stenosis (SAS).

Additionally, genetic testing for inherited diseases like Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) and Ichthyosis is advisable. When these clearances are available for both your stud and the dam, you significantly reduce the risk of passing on genetic defects to the puppies (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, 2023).

2. Pedigree and Lineage

A strong pedigree is another important aspect to consider. The dam should come from a line of dogs known for sound health, good temperament, and success in the show or field, depending on your breeding goals. Be sure to review the dam’s pedigree, which can be obtained through registries like the American Kennel Club (AKC). A good pedigree not only assures you of the quality of the dam, but also helps predict the puppies' potential (American Kennel Club, 2023).

3. Temperament and Personality

Golden retrievers are known for their friendly and calm nature, making them great family pets. However, temperament varies, and it’s essential that the dam exhibits traits you want to see in her offspring. A reputable breeder will allow you to spend time with the dam to observe her temperament in various situations.

Look for a dam that is well-socialized, confident, and friendly with people and other dogs. Aggression or extreme shyness could indicate poor breeding practices or a lack of proper socialization during puppyhood, which could affect the puppies' behavior.

4. Reputation of the Breeder

The breeder of the dam plays a key role in her health and well-being. A reputable breeder should:

• Prioritize the health and well-being of the dam and breed puppies to “better the breed” over profit.

• Be transparent about the dam's health, temperament, and pedigree.

• Offer references and allow you to see the dam’s living conditions.

• Participate in breed clubs or organizations, adhering to the Golden Retriever Club of America’s (GRCA) code of ethics.

Ask breeders for testimonials or reviews from previous clients. Responsible breeders also keep lifelong ties to the puppies they sell, offering support and guidance to new owners (Golden Retriever Club of America, 2023).

5. Physical Appearance and Conformation

While health and temperament should be top priorities, you also want to ensure that the dam conforms to the breed standard. A dam that closely matches the AKC’s physical standards for golden retrievers will produce puppies that meet the expected size, coat, and structure typical of the breed.

This is particularly important if you plan to breed show-quality dogs. Traits to look for include correct coat type, balanced body structure, intelligence, and the typical friendly expression of golden retrievers.

Sugar is my life and my world. After losing my husband to cancer last June 2023, I decided after a lot of research to purchase her and make her an emotional support animal. She is on the way to be a therapy dog so she can give love to nursing homes and hospitals. Goldens have a heart of gold 💛.

This is Blue and he is looking for his FURever home. He has an excellent temperament. Blue is lovable, affectionate, cuddly and plays well with his brothers and sisters from the litter.

He comes with all his first round of shots, AKC papers, dewormed, microchipped, bordetella, bag of toys, treats, food and blanket with his Mother’s scent. 

He is starting to learn “sit” and “stay” as well as “come” and going to the bathroom on his potty pad. He is a great listener and aims to please. He is well mannered with the adult dogs and people. He loves listening to music, playing with his new toys and being introduced to new smells.

🐾 River is 5 months old now and weighs a whopping 53lbs. He enjoys the company of his humans and his little sister, Gypsy O’Shenanigan. His favorite toy is a large teddy bear which he carries around adoringly and uses as his pillow. River is currently attending AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy classes to help him become a very well rounded good boy. He is very special and very loved.🐾

🐾Harlie is 7 years old. We got her from a family member when she was 7 months old.

She loves swimming, boating, snuggling, hiking, traveling, craft shows, breweries and loves playing ball (favorite). Harlie always has 1 or 2 stuffed animals in her mouth at one time.

She is such a happy girl who loves attention from mom and dad and is very jealous when we give attention to other dogs. Harlie has a brother named Munch that we rescued 2 years ago. She tolerates him lol. She is so much joy in our life. Harlie plans our weekends lol.🐾
